#Prata Om Det: Please Rape Me

with 4 comments

Den äldre kvinnan med välfriserat hår fnyser “put some clothes on honey, whatever you’re trying to say, it’s not working”. Män filmar flinande med ord som “hey, they say nothing in New York is free, look at this”. Andra – också flest män, förvånande eller inte – stannar, frågar och läser den konstnärliga presentationen. Gör det du också, här.

ENGLISH: Last night, outside MoMa, at 53rd Street between 5th and 6th Avenue. Men in suits and exclusive wool coats. Women in expensive jewelry and high heels. Together they hurdle against the icy wind, hurrying into the warmth and the Armory Show 2011 Opening Night Benefit. There, Haley, almost naked, dancing to Monster by Lady Gaga and Kanye West. On her body, words like ”no means yes” and “asking for it” – a guerilla performance commenting sexual assault and the cultural normalization of rape. “Put some clothes on honey, whatever you’re trying to say, it’s not working” an older woman smirks. Men pick up their iphones to videotape the moment with words like “hey, they say nothing in New York is free, look at this”. And then there are those – mostly men, surprising or not – who stop, ask and read the artist statement. You can do that too, here.

  2. [...] ‘Please Rape Me,’ my performance art piece at the MoMA was one of the colder experiences of my life, mostly because it was 20 degrees and windy, but also because I was wearing cellophane. But more importantly, it was cold because the art world guests attending the Armory Show Opening Night Benefit Party were so anxious to down a glass of champagne and schmooze that they couldn’t be bothered to examine what was going on with my blasting pop music and seasonally inappropriate outfit. But at least I made the herds of Prada-clad gallery girls, Wall Street collectors, and pseudo-British art dealers dreadfully uncomfortable for a few seconds as they hurried to the glass doors of the museum.
