Jonas Hassen Khemiri At The Powerhouse Arena

Helgen avslutades så fint, under blå himmel och strålande sol, på fina bokaffären The Powerhouse Arena (37 Main Street) i Dumbo, mellan Brooklyn Bridge och Manhattan Bridge. Jonas Hassen Khemiri dubbeldebuterar i USA i veckan, dels med boken “Montecore” som recenserars i New York Times Book Review till helgen, dels med pjäsen “Invasion!” som har premiär i morgon måndag på The Play Company (46 Walter Street) i Tribeca. De ämnena han utforskar i sitt skapande – språk, sanning, identitet – är sådana som dröjer sig kvar, bosätter sig i både hjärna och hjärta. Det var många svenskar i publiken och han sa en sak som nog slog an en ton hos många: “Jag gillar inte den engelska versionen av mig själv”. För det tar sådan tid att utveckla både humor och nyanser på ett andra språk, ens personligheten blir liksom platt, ihålig. ENGLISH: The weekend ended so good, under blue sky and smiling sun, in the beautiful bookstore The Powerhouse Arena (37 Main Street) in Dumbo, between Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan Bridge. Swedish author and playwrite Jonas Hassen Khemiri makes his double US debut this week, with the book “Montecore” which will be in the New York Times Book Review this weekend, and the play “Invasion!” which premieres tomorrow Monday at The Play Company (46 Walter Street) in Tribeca. The areas he explores – language, truth, identity – are ones that linger, builds a home in both mind and heart. There were a lot of Swedes in the audience, and he said something that I think most of us could relate to: “I don’t like the English version of myself”. Because it takes such a long time to find both humor and nuances of a second language, you feel your personality become flat, hollow. He ended with a reading of the novel “An attempt at nuclear physics”, if you haven’t read it, please do.
